On the second Saturday of every month a group of faith-motivated persons and community organizers stand vigil at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.
Our presence is a witness to the detention center workers that the existence of the center does not go un-noticed and most importantly as a testimony to family and friends visiting their incarcerated loved ones - an act of hospitality and accompaniment. Though we can offer little but a listening ear and tepid coffee or a few snacks, the visitors know that their sorrow and distress are shared by these strangers who act from faith.
As we hear their stories our own disbelief and outrage grow, as well as our compassion and motivation to actions of solidarity.
